Introduction of

Mons. Javier Herrera C.

first Cappellano of the Cappellania Italiana

Dear Friends,

You are welcomed to the Website of the Italian Catholic community of Hong Kong!

The Italian presence at this cosmopolitan city extends to nearly half millennium and since then immediately it became a perfect symbiosis with the local traditions, full of culture, arts, fashion, architecture, technology, gastronomy and non the less Catholicism. At the very early stages of the Catholic life in this Asian enclave we can find courageous Italians, whom not only make Jesus been known by the locals but also the “bel Paese”.

I would like to invite you to visit and read in this website the story of the Italian Community written by Mr. Angelo Paratico, for many years resident in this city, he with his proficient script will conduct you to the very beginnings of Xianggang and the Sciiamchiamensis Catholic Diocese (the Latin name to the Diocese of Hong Kong).

The current initiative has the objective to become like a “piazza” where we meet with pleasure new people, with friends to exchange ideas and, why not, to help each other spiritually. We, from our little, pretend to offer to those who would visit the site out by curiosity, or those who are just arrived to Hong Kong or are in town for long time but not acquitted to our community, the opportunity to find elements which can reveal helpful to link with other conational. Not the least, we pretend also to offer a modest catholic subsidy in a familiar language, which can turn helpful for those who may wish to participate actively in our weekly celebration.

The Holy Mass is celebrated every Sunday at 11:00 a.m. in Italian language at the Church of the Institute of the Canossa sisters. You may find the address and contacts in this website. the At the same venue, throughout the liturgical year are held different activities and especial moments of prayer. Important to note also that in our community are offered regularly catechism lesson for children and adults as well in Italian language.

A profound gratefulness to the Canossa Sisters who generously, since many years, have hosted our community into their beautiful Italian style Church, some photos are available in our photo gallery. Thanks to everyone, your friendship, involvement and support have made possible this project.

With pleasure, I extend to everyone a warm welcome, looking forward to see you coming Sunday at 11:00.

Cordially yours in Christ,

Msgr. Javier Herrera Corona
